Tales & Songs from Croatia
Performance on July 5, 7 pm
512 West 19th Street, NYC
Brooklyn based poet and performer Abena Koomson and Croatian visual artist and filmmaker Kristina Leko collaborate on a multimedia oral history project that shares stories and songs of the Croatian community in New York City.
Čežnja: Born Longing features members of the Croatian community from Astoria, Queens and throughout New York City, as well as a diverse assembly of New York-based artists. These artists react and interpret stories and songs contributed by the members of the Croatian community. On stage, they encounter one another physically and symbolically in a mixture of documentary video, live performance, poetry, beatboxing and a cappella singing. The performance promotes interaction between these communities, and audience engagement through collaborative and participatory art.
Čežnja: Born Longing is developed during a three-week residency at New York’s legendary performance space, The Kitchen, and culminates in a presentation there with additional events in Queens. Participating artists include Elana Bell, Zeljka Blaksic, Marcella Bonich, Mahogany Browne, Mirjam Busanich, Rachel Busanich, Sarah Dahnke, Ivica Gasparic, Karma Mayet Johnson, Dara Lazar, Adam Matta, Caitlin Meissner, Lynne Procope, Kate Quarfordt, Allison Schlegel, Margaret Zgombic, Nori Boni Zorovich.
Čežnja: Born Longing continues One Big City, a series of collaborative residencies and events produced by CEC ArtsLink in partnership with leading cultural institutions to engage New York’s diaspora communities through international arts initiatives. The inaugural One Big City project — a multimedia installation by New York artist Daniel Gallegos and Russian filmmaker Mikhail Zheleznikov, drew enthusiastic crowds to Museum of the Moving Image in May.
Abena Koomson is a Brooklyn-based writer, educator and performer. Notable performances include Celebrate Brooklyn’s African Festival, featuring headliner King Sunny Ade; the Four Women Tribute at Lincoln Center; Urban Voices International Festival, South Africa and FELA!.
